For many forehead lines can be a source of insecurity. It represents a third of your face and a lifetime of emotions and expressions. Indeed, forehead wrinkle relaxing treatments are one of the most popular aesthetics treatments at Serenbo Aesthetics. Core to the treatment is the understanding that everyone is unique. There is no one size fits all aesthetic treatment, and that is certainly true when it comes to the forehead. Find out more about the types of forehead wrinkles and the treatments available to address the signs of ageing.

This blog post was inspired by an article written by Mr Dalvi Humzah, a leading consultant in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Learn more about Mr Humzah's work in the aesthetics industry here.

How Will Your Forehead Age?

Forehead lines are a natural result of a lifetime of expressions and facial movements. Environmental factors like sunlight, smoking and pollution also have an affect. As your body starts to decrease it's production of collagen and elastin, the skin loses it's elasticity. With the decrease in elasticity, lines that were once dynamic, they would only show in a certain position, are more likely to become static lines. That means that lines become deeper and more permanent.

The makeup of your face's muscles and connective tissue can have an impact on the direction that your forehead lines take. There are in fact four types of forehead anatomy. For those interested in medical science, you can find the original study on this research here. The four types of forehead line presentations are:

V-shaped. V-shaped lines can be recognised by almost 'M' shape lines originating from above the corners of your eyebrows to form a 'V' in the centre of your forehead. There will be a lack of visible lines at the top centre of your forehead. These lines are formed when muscle covers the entire width of your forehead and are one of the most common forehead line presentation types.

Horizontal. Horizontal lines are also a common forehead line presentation type. Unlike V-shaped lines, horizontal lines run straight across the forehead starting from above the corners of the eyebrows and do not slope inwards in the centre. These lines are formed when you have two bands of muscle separated by connective tissue.

Central. These lines are slightly less common. They display a similar pattern to horizontal lines but only show in the centre of the forehead. Central forehead line patterns show when your connective tissue is lateral, to the sides of the forehead. since there is no muscle on the sides, no lines will form above the corners of the eyebrow.

Lateral. I rarely treat those with lateral lines and this is supposedly a rarer forehead line presentation. Lateral forehead lines only show above the eyebrows with no visible lines in the centre of the forehead. This is a consequence of the forehead's muscle bands being positioned to both sides of the forehead, connected by a large portion of connective tissue in the centre.

Aesthetics Treatments For Forehead Lines

When it comes to treating forehead lines, many aesthetics practitioners will usually suggest wrinkle relaxing treatments that use botulinum toxins (such as Botox). This treatment works by relaxing the muscles, limiting movement. As a result the lines become relaxed, smoothing it out and preventing the line from deepening too. Injecting the forehead with the toxin in the wrong place can either result in no positive effect on the lines, or cause negative effects such as drooping eyebrows or even a frozen look. This is why choosing an aesthetics practitioner who understands their client's anatomy is so important.

In some instances with deeper forehead lines, dermal filler may be the better treatment option. Dermal filler treatments use Hyaluronic Acid to plump the skin and support your skin's collagen and elastin fibres.

Of course, no matter your forehead type, the best treatments are always preventative. Since pollution, smoke and sunlight all contribute to your forehead lines, using the right skin care can make a big difference. Your stress levels and diet can also lead to forehead lines. Vitamin boost injections are one of the most effective ways of receiving the vitamins that your body needs if it is not possible to do so through your diet.

So when choosing your aesthetics practitioner to treat your forehead lines, make sure to choose one who knows your forehead anatomy and who will provide the right treatment for you. I have been practicing wrinkle aesthetics treatments for over 20 years as a qualified aesthetics nurse.
